Git 'er Done.

I made Thai Peanut Chicken with Pineapple Fried Rice for dinner.  It was tasty.  And simple.  You should make it if you're looking for a simple, tasty meal.

Otherwise, I studied all day.  Finished my children's ministry paper (one course complete), and worked halfheartedly on my systematic theology study guide.  I also went grocery shopping; hence the real chicken dinner.

I realize this is all very riveting.  I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat to see what happens next.

Pardon me for being a bit cynical about the blog post...I've been somewhat cynical in general lately, not entirely sure why.

Here's a happy video to work against the cynicism and mundane post...and to put you in the Christmas season...

Good Day Back

Today was a fairly good day all around.  I got to leave work two hours early because I finished my work early, picked up my package of the final three seasons of Friends DVDs from the post-office, googled an ancestor who thought there were vampires in the family (the entry in that link is "Rose Family Vampire"; William G. Rose is my great-great-great-great grandfather's brother), chatted with a couple friends on the phone, accomplished some more Christmas gift shopping (via the internet), decluttered the apartment (marking a successful first day of Celia's new daily chore chart), made some Sweet and Sour Chicken for dinner, and watched two episodes on the aforementioned Friends DVDs.

You'll notice that finishing a paper was not on that list.

I may still get around to that tonight.  I'm really not super worried about it...since classes are over and I don't work on Wednesdays, I have all day tomorrow to finish the 4-6 pages that remain, and it's been writing REALLY quickly.  Today was kind of a transition day from Thanksgiving break back into the reality of Dallas life and responsibilities.  At least, that's what I'm telling myself to justify my lack of academic accomplishment today.

Now go have yourself a merry little Wednesday.  See you tomorrow night.

Back.

Back in Dallas. along with my luggage and all its contents, which remained intact...including a porcelain painted egg that my Dad brought back for me from Ephesus, which was the most breakable of the luggage contents.  Ironically, I did drop that egg when I was taking it OUT of my luggage, but happily I caught it just as it was falling toward the pile of clothes in the still-open suitcase and all is well.  Other still-intact luggage contents include a ceramic nativity set that I've had since I was a kid, the wooden stable that goes with said nativity, and a ceramic caroling angel figurine that my grandmother gave me.

Basically, nothing broke.  Which is a good thing.  And now my apartment has many more Christmas elements.  Which is also a good thing.

The air travel was uneventful.  I sat next to an engaged couple on the plane who chatted loudly for most of the trip.  After I arrived back in Dallas it took me about an hour and a half to get from plane to baggage claim to luggage acquisition to shuttle port to shuttle to parking lot to car to pay booth to my apartment.  Long evening of travel, but now I'm snuggled on my couch watching Friends reruns on TV and probably going to bed soon.

Back to work and paper-writing tomorrow.

Almost Over

My vacation is almost over :(  Flying back to Dallas tomorrow...but not until evening.  But still.

It's almost back to reality with me...

The Vacation Continues

I spent day 3 of my Thanksgiving vacation with my best friend of 13 years (we met in 6th grade), having Thai food for lunch, Peppermint Mochas from Starbucks for dessert, and wandering about the mall.  Yay for friendship!

Only 2 days left of vacation :(  But tomorrow's the first Sunday since August where I haven't had to work :)

And that's all I've got for today.

Not So Black Friday

My family doesn't participate in the Black Friday madness; we used to do it back when we were all a bit younger and a bit more foolish, but now the morning after Thanksgiving is meant snuggled in bed asleep until mid-morning.  But today, we did embark on another holiday tradition: heading down to historic St. Charles, MO to wander about the shops, and see the general Christmas festivities: Santa's of the world, 19th century-style carolers, and lots and lots of pine boughs and ribbons.  We usually don't go to St. Charles until later in December, but perhaps because I won't be back home until Christmas day, we decided to push the tradition up a few weeks, to the very beginning of the Christmas season.

Check out some pictures from the day!

Carolers!  A different bunch followed us around for most of the day

Me and Mom :)

Chillin' with some Nutcrackers

Parents being precious :)
After a fun afternoon of window shopping and Christmas merriment, my sister and I attempted to make mini gingerbread houses.  The construction left something to be desired...

Fail.
...but my final result turned out all right :)

The evening concluded with a rousing game of that 1996 classic board game, "Electronic Mall Madness" (emphasis on the "electronic") with my mom and my sister.  My parents have been cleaning out the basement, and this game was found to be still intact and properly working.  It was a fun flashback.  For the record, Hannah won.

Got my shopping list, got my debit card, got my money.

Check out that awesome game board.
All in all, it was a very, very good day of good old fashioned family fun :)  Much better than camping out in front of Walmart.

Thankful!

It's Thanksgiving!  Let's make a list of things I'm thankful for!

-Being home with my family for a few days

-Laughing maniacally with aforementioned family

-Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, boiled onions, rolls, green beans, stuffing, apple pie, pumpkin pie, and banana pudding

-Friends old and friends new

-The month-long break from classes that lies on the horizon

-Commercials where middle-aged men scream like teenage girls about Justin Bieber (watch for it on TV)

-My cozy apartment and comfy furniture

-Browsing family photo albums with my sister and laughing hysterically over bad hair and awkward posture

-That episode of Friends where Rachel puts beef in the trifle

-That 90s Nickelodeon shows are back on the air

-Cool weather and pea coats

-Playing catch and washers in the front yard

-My high school diploma, my bachelor's degree, and my imminent master's degree

-The love and support that my family has always shown me

And many, many other things.  But that would be a very long list :)

Home Again, Home Again, Ziggity Zag

Flew back to St. Louis with success, had dinner with the family and frozen yougurt with an old friend, and am now cuddled up on a couch watching TV with my sister.  Soon I will be going to bed, absolutely beat from a day of class, travel, and family/friend reunion.

It's vacation.

Tomorrow!  Tomorrow!  Tomorrow!  Tomorrow!  I get to visit home TOMORROW!!!

One Down...

My eyes are burning, my brain is tired, and my fingers ache from typing...this must mean that I actually did write papers all day today.  And I finished...one.  Not two.  But one.  The good news though is that the one paper I finished is the only one that I truly *needed* to get done before Thanksgiving...the other one isn't due until a week from Friday (meaning I can work on it AFTER Thanksgiving), and I finished all the research for that one yesterday, plus an intro paragraph.  So that's something.

I also did all my laundry today, meaning that all my clothes are now clean and ready to be packed into suitcases. I once had ambitions of packing tonight (as well as cleaning) but I think I'm at crash point.  Actually, I may turn on a CD and try to speed-clean the apartment for the duration of the album.  And by CD, I mean iTunes.  I don't even have a CD player in my apartment.

So while it would have been stellar if I'd finished two papers today (yeah, stellar), I'm still in pretty good shape, and still will not have to worry about homework over break.  The only thing is that I'm a little weary of having a week's stretch between research and writing for that second paper, just because it's all still fresh in my brain right now.  But the information is all there, and will still be there in a week.

OK, I think I'm going to speed clean...two more days until I get a break!

The Good News...

...is that I made MAJOR headway on the seemingly insurmountable children's ministry paper today.  I changed the topic from second-generation immigrant cultural identity to "moving from cliques to community", which fits wonderfully with my very community-centered small congregation for that much-detested case study that was a surprise requirement of the paper.  Did that sentence make sense?  Well I understand what's going on, and ultimately that's what's most important.  None of you are going to read my paper.  In any case, today I acquired 9 typed pages of research from 10 sources, which will shortly be organized into outline form, from whence I will write the actual paper itself (this is my patented three-day paper-writing process, although it's going to be squished into two days in this case).  Hopefully I'll do that tonight (it's 11:45, but I'm not tired yet and it's all copy-pasting) so I can focus on writing tomorrow.  Ideally, I want to whip out a Theological Reflection Paper for my internship tomorrow (that little gem is due next Tuesday night at midnight, which is the day after I get back from Thanksgiving).  Needless to say, if I can achieve my ambitious goal of writing two papers tomorrow, it will be a very good thing...leaving me to focus on studying for my two December 5 finals and writing a final paper that is due on December 7th.  Follow all that?

I'm actually really hopeful about being able to write those papers tomorrow...I'm planning my strategy today, which was "Suck it up and just do it" (very profound, I know).  Thanksgiving break is a good motivator...nothing on my to-do list will be neglected, I am adamant about that.

In other news, week two of the kid's fellowship ministry I designed for the church where I'm interning was SPECTACULAR.  Literally flawless.  I couldn't believe it.  It was exactly how I envisioned it.  The kids were well-behaved, we had enough food, every kid had a seat at a table, the volunteers got to eat, the kids were excited to come back.  It was a beautiful thing.

Back to paper land.

Update:  I power cleaned.  And in an hour I had a clean apartment, and knocked 5 things off my to-do list for tomorrow.  Boo ya.

Frustration!!

For being (nearly) finished with classes, I have way too many paper-writing-related problems.  One paper remains topic-less for all intents and purposes, and the other papers feel like busywork, but are nonetheless time-consuming.  And today, which was supposed to be a paper-writing day, turned into a getting-frustrated-with-papers, skyping-with-college-friend, going-to-the-mall, laying-around-in-exhaustion-from-walking-around-the-mall day.

Baaaaaaaaaaah.

I shall pay the consequences soon enough...

Friday. Finally.

Welcome to the weekend!  Other than the excitement of sleeping in tomorrow, there was nothing much exciting about my day.  Class was class, work was work...although I did eat a Thanksgiving lunch with a bunch of senior citizens, and got to leave work an hour early because I finished my work early.

And then I literally spent the night laying on the couch watching television, talking on the phone with my mom, and playing around on the internet looking at crafts and food recipes.  I'm planning to spend the rest of the night reading things and writing things unrelated to school.  And that's that.

Sorry I'm not more interesting?

Laughing Day

For reasons I can't really specify, today was filled with an unusually high amount of laughter.  I think everyone's getting progressively happier as Thanksgiving break approaches (along with the end of classes for the semester, if not the end of assignments).

Highlights of the day include my Old Testament class throwing a going-away party for my Argentinian professor...who is not actually going back to Argentina until May.  So that was awkward, but enjoyable.  I actually knew he wasn't leaving, but found out too late into party plans to do anything about it (and didn't know anyone well enough to tell them of their folly).  Our professor was appreciative, once he figured out what was going on, and there was much tasty food to be had...the class went all-out for this non-going-away party, including sushi, spring rolls, and cheesecake, among other things.  Then, already fairly stuffed with food, I went to dinner at my friends' house in honor of one of the girls' birthdays, and although I didn't eat too much, enjoyed some good socialization and, again, a lot of laughter.  I also got to hang out with some classmates I don't see very often, so that was fun.

One more day until the much-anticipated weekend...we can do this, people!!!

Is it graduation yet?

Today started off badly...one of those quintessential "got up on the wrong side of the bed" kinds of mornings.  I took a long nap after my first class, and was in a considerably better mood when I woke up.

Let's just say that senioritis is setting in, big time.  With only a week left of classes this semester, and only one remaining semester of formal education, I'm itching for a break.  More specifically, I'm itching for travel...it's been far too long since I set off for some place new.

Tomorrow's the last day for three of my classes this semester...the countdown is on.

I also did some gift shopping today :)

Free Turkey, Anyone?

I don't actually have one to offer you, but I did spend the day calling about 30 elderly people to see if they would like to receive a free turkey for Thanksgiving from the food distribution ministry that our church partners with.  That was a nice way to start the day.  Lots of gratitude, lots of happiness.

I really like my job.  This is something that was confirmed today.  As much as I never really want to go, because, let's face it, I'd rather just lay around on the couch watching TV and napping all day, I truly do love my job once I'm there.  And that's a very good thing, since this job is a preview of the career to come.

Hum dee dum.

Off to bed :)

Christmas Luminaries

Homemade Christmas luminaries from jars...complete.

They make me happy.  The Christmas decoration piece count is now up to three, with the luminaries, scrap paper tree, and Christmas tree.  It's never too soon to get into the holiday season.  And, since I only have a week and a half of classes left (ah!), I'm *almost* on Christmas break anyway.  So it's all good.

The rest of the day was less than notable, spent in the library reading about creation theology and watching TV reruns.  That 70s Show has begun to make a regular appearance in my life.  I also made pork chops with fruit stuffing in the slow cooker...tasty!  At least, I assume it will be...I wasn't too hungry by the time it was finished so I just ate some of the stuffing.  It was tasty, so I assume the full dish will be as well.

Well that was an exciting conversation about pork chops, wasn't it?

As you may have guessed, I'm short for inspiration tonight.  So let's just call this post complete, shall we?

Success!

Today was the launch of a new children's fellowship ministry that I designed for the church where I'm completing my internship...and it worked!!!  I don't know if people (aside from my mother) fully understand how nervous I was about this.  I can design new projects all day, but implementing them totally intimidates me.  As was to be expected, there are some kinks that need to be worked out, but all in all I was really pleased with how well it went!  It's really cool to see a program that I designed come to life, and to see the kids enjoying it, and the adults appreciating it...and, this is the first big thing I've done at work that I completely came up with (as opposed to just doing things that I'm told to do).

Even though it went well for the most part, I was EXHAUSTED when I left work.  It's been a long time since I've corralled a large group of children, and it wore me out!  I therefore spent the afternoon on the couch watching mindless television and going out for celebratory Smores Hot Chocolate with a friend.  I skipped Bible Study because I was just too tired to go, and instead spent the night watching The Big Bang Theory reruns and painting glass jars into Christmas-y luminaries.  There's something very therapeutic about painting at the end of a long day...I ought to do more of it.  The crafting phase may be here to stay.  I'll post a picture of the luminaries once they're done - they're still in the process of drying right now.  It's not a complicated project by any means, but it's fun :)

Work! Ah!

Today I sat in a five and a half hour work meeting, then spent the rest of the day fretting about work tomorrow.  And...that's about it.  I did also talk to an old friend on Skype for a long time, which was nice.  The rest of the day was unfortunately work-heavy.  Nothing much to comment on there.

So...the end :)

Christmas Craft...Revealed!

Perhaps the suspense isn't all that necessary, but it was unintentionally built up over the last couple days' posts.  So get ready...here it is!

It's a Christmas scrap paper tree!  It ended up being somewhat bigger than I anticipated, but I found a good place for it on the bookshelf, as you can see.  It was super easy, if somewhat time consuming...basically, you cut out a ton of leaves from scrapbook paper, glue two of them together with floral wire in between, and wrap the wire around branches.  And ta da!  Scrap paper tree!  I may go back in and take out one of the sticks...it's looking a bit cumbersome at the bottom.  But overall, I'm happy with how it turned out, and I really enjoy having a craft project sitting around to work on.  My next project (much less involved) will be luminaries made from jars.  Should be fun :)

The directions I followed are at this link.  Like any craft, their version is much more polished and perfect, but I like my more rustic version.  In totally unrelated news, I went and saw Tower Heist in theaters tonight, and it was good.  You ought to go see it.  Afterwards my friend and I got burgers at Chips at Lovers Lane and Inwood.  If you live in Dallas, you should go eat there.

Work meeting most of the day tomorrow...happy Saturday?

Personal Christmas Party

Today was not the best of days...classes were interminable, the day was long, I was tired, and the insurance drama of yester-month sallies forth.  So, beat down and depressed, I decided there was only one thing to do.

I decided to throw myself a Christmas party.

I went all-out for my spontaneous personal Christmas party.  Deciding from the start that no Christmas party is complete without homemade cookies fresh from the oven, I hunted down a Coconut Cookie Recipe that I thought I had all of the ingredients for, and quickly discovered that I didn't have any baking soda.  I quickly threw on my new green pea coat, and used this opportunity to go to Central Market, the swanky grocery store across the street from my tried and true Tom Thumb store, to pick up some baking soda and something to eat for dinner.  Central Market has a massive prepared food section, so I picked up some chicken cordon bleu and lemon-scented jasmine rice.  Because this is a Christmas party, and you should have good party food.

So I got back to the apartment, flipped on a Pandora Christmas station, and set to heating up my dinner and whipping up the cookie batter.  Then I plopped myself down on the couch, with the first batch of cookies in the oven, and popped in a Friends DVD to watch my favorite Christmas episode - "The One with the Holiday Armadillo."  For you non-Friends aficionados, the general plot line is that Ross (who is Jewish, by the way) wants to get his son excited about Hanukkah, but feels bad that Santa isn't coming and tries at the last minute to rent a Santa costume...and is predictably unsuccessful.  The result: the Holiday Armadillo, Santa's half-Jewish helper.  It's generally hilarious.

Party dinner.

Party Cookies, Part 1

Party Cookies, Part 2
After dinner, I turned the Christmas music back on, and proceeded to set up my recently acquired Christmas tree.  I was a little bit concerned about it's Charlie Brown-esque spindly quality at first, but when the lights are turned on and with ornaments to fill it out, it actually looks pretty good.   I hung my ornaments happily, after tying ribbons around the top of each, and cut out a star from sparkly scrapbook paper to top the tree.  It makes me happy.

Ta-da!  Christmas tree!

For size reference
The tree is actually just the perfect size for my apartment...big enough to not be pathetic, but small enough to not overwhelm the room.  It was the idea of setting up the Christmas tree that first sparked the personal Christmas party idea, and I was right - having a lit-up Christmas tree in the room makes my life a little brighter (pun intended), and makes it seem like everything's going to be okay.

I finished out the night by watching Funny Face on DVD while working on the Christmas craft project (which is coming along quite nicely, but is still not quite finished and therefore not yet photo-worthy).  Old musicals just feel Christmas-y, even if they have nothing to do with Christmas.  But Audrey Hepburn, fun dance scenes, and movies set in Paris are always welcome in my life.

Of course, no Christmas party movie viewing is complete without hot chocolate and cookies.

Toasty
So I glued paper and twisted wire while watching my old movie, and sipped my hot chocolate while munching on my cookies, and called it a good night.  Who cares if Christmas is still a month and a half away, anyway?  I need a little Christmas, right this very minute.

Cool Stuff I Found Online

If I wasn't knee-deep into this blog project (or neck deep, really), I would totally start a blog about cool stuff that I found online.  Having recently discovered the joys of Etsy through the Pride and Prejudice earrings, I've gone on a hunt to find as many unique handmade products as possible and either gawk at them or actually purchase them.  This hunt for handmade was a large factor in my current craft phase (more on that in a later post, once the project is finished).  But for a hint, here are the materials that are involved...

Yeah.  I'm sure you're intrigued.  There's actually one material missing from the picture because I haven't yet foraged for it (yeah, foraged), but more on all that in a later post.  But, it fits in this post because it's a cool project that I found (yes) online.

Back to the real reason for the post.  Today I received a handmade journal that I ordered from Ex Libris Anonymous, an Oregon-based studio that repurposes vintage books into journals.  If you like reading and writing, like me, then you know that this is SUPER cool (and at $14 a piece, they're super cheap).  Here's the one I ordered:

In this case, it's an old German book of folk songs.  And, like all of Ex Libris's journals, there are pieces of the original book incorporated into the now-journal.  Besides the cover, there are original book pages interleaved with journal pages...

...artwork original to the book...

...and, what I think is super cool, a little touch from a previous owner.

The result is that each journal is totally unique, and it was so exciting to have this arrive in my mailbox!  I don't know what I'm going to use it for yet...it seems like it should be something super artsy or poetic, so we'll see what comes of that.

So that's a cool thing I found online!  What cool things have you found?

Sickness and Craftiness

I spent most of the day feeling sick from what I believe to be food poisoning from last night's dinner...let's just say it was not a good night.  I woke up early to register for classes at 7am, which was done with success (for my last semester of classes ever!!), and then went back to sleep until 11:30.  I spent most of the day lying on the bed watching TV and occasionally nibbling at toast before deciding I was well enough to go to my Old Testament class in the late afternoon, which ironically made me feel better thanks to fresh air and social interaction.  Nonetheless, I spent the night (you guessed it) laying on the couch reading the second Hunger Games book (which came into my possession this afternoon) and watching Ratatouille on DVR (because Disney movies and thinking about Paris are both good medicine).  Overall, I'm feeling much better, and expect to feel just fine by tomorrow.

Anywho, in the middle of all this, I spent a good deal of time surfing the internet looking for unique Christmas gifts for people (to no avail yet, unfortunately), but since I was looking at a lot of handmade sites, this quickly became the beginning of a desire to become a person who makes awesome crafts in her free time.  I had a similar urge this time last year and attempted to learn how to crochet (which was mostly unsuccessful, but had potential), but this time I've found several specific projects I want to try.  I've started to discover how much time I spend watching TV, and I'd like to cut that down by finding other things to do in my free time.  I'll keep you updated as the craftiness unfolds...

Lazy Monday

Today was spent primarily watching television, working, leading a committee meeting, and more television.  Not much to report on there.  In fact, I'm not feeling too super great, so I think I'm calling it a night early.

Merry Monday to all, and to all a good Tuesday.

Reading Day!

For once, the title "Reading Day" is used here in the best possible ways...because I quite literally (apart from work in the morning and Bible study in the evening), read for fun all day.  Over 200 pages.  And all because Suzanne Collins, the author of The Hunger Games, knows how to end literally every single chapter on a cliffhanger that makes you want to turn the page and keep reading.

So I spent the entire afternoon and night curled up on my couch under a snuggie reading The Hunger Games.  And even though the book is really, really intense, being one of those dystopia sorts of novels, it's truly impossible to put down.  I'm already begging my friend Miranda (who lent me this book) to borrow the second book.

But now, I really ought to go to bed...I stayed up reading past my (lackadaisically imposed) bedtime!  Wish school reading could hold my attention like that...

Pony Up!"P"

Today I participated in the tradition of most colleges and universities across the country, but a tradition that I, being a student of the liberal arts at a football-less school, did not experience.

That's right.  Today, I participated in Homecoming...parade, tailgating, football game, and all.

I went tailgating last year (or "boulevarding" as it's known around SMU), but didn't stick around for the game because it started to rain, and missed the parade because we arrived late.  So really, last year I just stood on the street and ate some food with classmates.  This year was way more homecoming-tastic, including cornhole, an oversized jenga game, fire-grilled ribs, potato salad, and apple cobbler, and of course, the football game itself.  We played against Tulane, and won by something like 20 points.  And I got to see Peruna, the real live pony mascot of the SMU Mustangs, run across the field every time our team got a touchdown....that made me happy.  The only sporting events I ever went to in undergraduates were field hockey games, and we didn't have a live Pioneer to set loose as a mascot, so the big-college football game experience was quite novel and enjoyable for me...even if now I have a horribly embarrassing sunglasses-shaped sunburn to prove it.

Here are some pictures from the day!

to be a horse ear, I believe.  Yes, it's weird.  Yes, we all did it.

Holy Cockroach

Franz Kafka's renowned Metamorphosis begins with the phrase "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams, he found himself transformed in his bed into a giant cockroach."  I actually liked Metamorphosis.  You should go read it.

I thought about Kafka this morning, as I spent the first of my waking hours staring at a giant cockroach myself.

I'd been awake for roughly 20 minutes and was just finishing getting ready when I saw the thing crawling across the bathroom wall.  I screamed, jumped backwards...and realized that my morning was about to take a dramatic turn.

I ran out of the room, got a plastic cup and magazine from the kitchen, and returned to the bathroom.  And I stared at it.  And I stared at it.  I waited for it to crawl down to the floor, and watched it crawl higher and higher along the wall near the ceiling.  And I stared at it.

And after 10 minutes of staring at it, I knew that I was never going to be able to catch this creature.

So I called my friend Rachel, to no success.  So I called maintenance, and put in a work order for them to come and spray for cockroaches...even if this is the only one I've ever seen, I've heard enough horror stories to not want to take any chances where enormous bugs are involved.  Giving up all of my dignity in one fell swoop, I asked if maintenance can catch bugs for people.  "Well, we can't really answer that question since we just put in the work orders...that's something you'd need to look into locally."  OK good.  Back to staring at the cockroach.  After a couple minutes, I stick my head out the door to see if any maintenance guys are wandering around, particularly Reuben...he's the head of maintenance for my part of the complex, and we're on friendly enough terms after the infamous flooding incident that I know he'd come in and catch a cockroach for me in a heartbeat.  Too bad I don't have a direct number for Reuben.  I look at my clock: 8:10.  I usually leave for class at 8:30.  In a last ditch effort, I call my friend Katrina.

"Hello?"

"Katrina?  Have you left for campus yet?"

"Ah, I'm just leaving right now, I'm running late...what's up?"

"OK...are you afraid of bugs?"

"Umm, no?"

"I realize this is a stupid question...but can you come here on the way to campus and help me catch a cockroach."

"Umm...sure!"

Thank the good Lord.  Help was on the way.

I spent the next 45 minutes sitting in my bathroom, staring at the cockroach from a distance.  My apartment IS on the way to campus from Katrina's apartment, but morning traffic still makes it quite a hike.  But she was my only hope, and I was determined not to lose the cockroach in the meantime.  And so I watched it.  For 45 minutes.

A lot of thoughts run through your mind when you have nothing to do but stare at an enormous bug for nearly an hour.  Thoughts like..."I can't believe you couldn't just catch this thing yourself"..."WHY don't you have more guy friends, you're such a failure!"..."Do cockroaches bite?"..."This is stupid"..."You should have gotten a roommate, then they could catch the bugs"..."As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams..."

Finally, at 8:47am, Katrina arrived, and bless that girl's heart, caught that dang bug in under a minute.  We ran it to the dumpster, threw both our bags in my car, and rushed to campus for class.

On a good day, it takes me exactly 10 minutes to get to campus, by cutting through the ritzy neighborhood that lies adjacent to the SMU campus.  Unfortunately, we caught just enough stoplights and had to wait for just enough left turns that we were pulling into the parking garage at 9am (still better than it could have been).  But the class we were heading toward was our Systematic Theology class...that class where we were told on the first day that we would immediately fail the course if we were found using our computers for anything besides note taking, and where students walking in late are typically received with all the coldness of the North Pole.  Walking in at 9:07, we peeked through the classroom door and could tell that class had already started.  Great.

I took a deep breath and opened the door, and Katrina and I shuffled in with our heads bent and our metaphorical tails between our legs, and filed into our seats in the back corner of the classroom.  The professor's voice stopped just long enough at our entry to be disconcerting, but I suppose we looked contrite enough that we got a better reaction than some students who saunter in unaffected at ten past.  As the lecture droned on, Katrina and I unzipped our backpacks with the most trepidation you can imagine, trying to make as little noise as possible.  I even pulled out my headphones and plugged them into the computer for fear of a start-up noise drawing further attention to our lateness.  And so class continued, until 9:50, and we made our glorious departure.

Taking Katrina back to my apartment for her car and making a detour through McDonalds for some much-needed breakfast was just enough to make me late to work; thankfully, my boss is pretty flexible on time.  I actually ended up leaving work an hour and a half early simply because all of my work was finished and my boss couldn't think of anything else for me to do.  After work, I tried to buy a Christmas tree on sale, but discovered at the store that the sale doesn't start until Sunday (fail),  and so I came back to the apartment exhausted, Christmas tree-less, and jumping at every shadow.  I finally managed to fall asleep on the couch, took a 2 hour nap, and woke up feeling distinctly less alarmed by the morning's bug fiasco.

The rest of the evening was actually very enjoyable; my friend Miranda and I got tacos for dinner, then went shopping at Old Navy because we both needed winter clothes and I had a 30% off coupon...I acquired a green pea coat (which I've been wanting for about 3 years), a red crocheted beret, a blue sweater, a couple tank tops, and a brown knit cape-like sweater thing.  I think my total savings were around $80 ($30 from the coupon and $50 from other sales going on in the store), so even if it was a somewhat expensive shopping trip it was well worth it...and now I have some good key winter pieces to add to my wardrobe.  We finished out the night by swinging by The Cheesecake Factory (for cheesecake, naturally) which we ordered to-go, and ate while watching The Big Bang Theory at my apartment (where, incidentally, I haven't seen another cockroach since this morning, and believe me, I've been looking).

My hope on the cockroach front is that it was just one fluke bug who crawled inside somehow because it's finally starting to get cold here in Texas, and indoor bugs are becoming more common.  At least, that is the thought that I'm desperately clinging to, for my own sanity.  Because otherwise, all I can do is sit timidly in the corner of my sofa, staring around the room and feeling invisible things crawling on me...

Good Day!

Today was a really good day.  This really good day comes to you in three parts, and excludes one portion of the day that was not so good because I was exhausted and feeling sick.  Focus on the positive.

Part 1: Gave a KILLER presentation on my Children's Ministry class (bad terminology?  you get the point).  Seriously though, it went really, really well...I was very pleased with how it went, despite having a page of my notes mysteriously disappear from the printing (GoogleDocs was acting up).

Part 2:  My Pride and Prejudice earrings came in the mail from England today!!  Squeeeee!!!!!  This is good for two reasons: 1) I now have awesome new earrings, and 2) I no longer have to worry about the possibility of this small, untrackable package getting lost somewhere in the Trans-Atlantic shipping process.  PLUS, the packaging was (necessarily) all British-tastic, with a giant stamp of the Queen's head and stickers that say "Royal Mail" and "Par Avion."  It's always good to have extra proof that something European has entered your life.  And the earrings look just like they did online, which is also good!  I've spent a good amount of time tonight just holding the box and looking at them, which may be nerdy, but they're pretty and I like them :)

Part 3: Spontaneous Frozen Yogurt outing with friends, after an evening consisting entirely of television and frozen pizza.  I'm finally off the massive homework pile, and have time to relax again!  Now if only I didn't have to go to class and work tomorrow...Thursday nights are always deceptively Friday-like in my life.  But maybe I'll wear my new earrings tomorrow and remember the goodness that was today :)

Whew!

After 7 cumulative hours in the library today, my presentation for tomorrow is finished, marking the end of major assignments until December (yay!).  My PowerPoint is all kinds of adorable...children's ministry presentations lend themselves well to bright colors and polka dots and pictures of adorable children jumping up and down.  For interested parties, I'm presenting on the Workshop Rotation Model of children's Christian education, which basically claims a thesis of declaring that Sunday School shouldn't be boring.  Google it.  It makes me want to be a kid in these Sunday School classes...but then, I guess that working in educational ministry is the next best thing!   Hooray for having an intended career path!

In other homework related news, I did the wrong reading (and wrote a response sheet on that incorrect reading) for my systematic theology class this week, and only found out half an hour before class.  That was exciting...those systematics readings are no small task, it takes about 3 hours to complete all the reading...that wasn't really going to fit into half an hour.  I read about half a page of one of the proper readings, and managed to write a substandard response sheet on it...I think they're mainly for completion anyway, so it's all good.

So it was an intense day of work, but I actually managed to finish at the reasonable hour of 10:30pm, walking out the doors to the dulcet tones of the intercom blaring "Bridwell Library will close in 30 minutes..."

Looking forward to tomorrow night...no homework to do! :)
